The API uses a large set of data sources, including our honeypot network, WHOIS records from the five major RIRs, various threat intelligence feeds, internet-wide scans and other open source tools. Each IP address is checked for a number between 0 and 1 that indicates how likely it is to be a proxy / VPN / hosting or bad IP. The number is determined using dynamic checks, which look for characteristics of the IP that are associated with proxies / VPNs / bad IPs such as the open ports they tend to use, their NAT Type, and other factors.
